I am wondering if the FT-991A is worth the extra 600.00 over the FT-991. I believe that there were some quality issues with the FT-991, but Yaesu corrected the issues with units manufactured in 2016.
I am open to other radios that are similar. I want 160-10 HF, UHF/VHF. and 6 meters including FM.
I believe Yaesu is the only one that has the complete package in the price range of $1500 and under.

FT-991 Weak HF Receive - Receiver fault
Bugger me, the dam think blew again, I was in the WPX contect with my FTdx3000 with the amp and the FT-991A was on 40m. I noticed that in IPO mode on the 991A nothing heard. Lucky I had bought 50 of those little 150 ohm surface mount resistors.
Pulled the bottom off the 991A and found R1005 just next to RL1001. The resistor had broken in two and the cct board was burnt where is sits. Its not worth trying to solder the bloody thing in there as its too small. I tacked a small piece of wire onto the relay pad where one side of the 150 ohm resistor connects and a small piece of wire onto the terminal of J1001. The ends of these two wires sat above the board a little and I soldered one side of the new 150 ohm resistor to one wire, bent the other wire over to touch the other side of the resistor and soldered it.

FT-991 Weak HF Receive
I seem to have a big drop in sensitivity on all HF bands. It has been a superb receiver for the past year. Transmit is normal.
On a strong signal with ATT off and IPO the S- meter is at 0. The spectrum display is near the bottom line. The same signal with ATT off and AMP1 is S9+5dB and the spectrum display is above the first bar. With ATT off and AMP2 the S-meter reads about S9+15dB and the spectrum display is on the second (middle) line. The difference between IPO and AMP1 is an almost inaudible signal to S9+.
A signal that is S-9 on my FT-897D (with that rigs ATT and IPO both off) is barely S9 on the FT-991 with ATT off and AMP2 on and at S0 with no amps (IPO). With the amps off it is S zero. VHF/UHF is normal. Looks like I have a receiver problem.

Glenn/WA3LAB found the fix below on the net to resolve the issue with the Yaesu FT-991 in AM mode. The techs at Yaesu they said they’re aware of it, but Yaesu has not put out a bulletin on it.
Both Glenn & I have followed this procedure and it appears to work. I wouldn’t want it put out there without letting people know that they should proceed with care, and not to change anything else unless they really know what they’re doing. Since there’s not many people running AM anymore most people have no idea there’s a problem.
(Warning: once you put the radio into the service mode you can really screw things up, so do this at your own risk.)

Yaesu FT-991 Two Tone Test
The following images depict the results of a two tone test I ran on
the repaired FT-991. The rear data port was used to inject the signal
from a PC running SpectrumLab. Tones where set to 1000Hz and 1575Hz respectively. The RF out of the Yaesu FT-991 was fed into the SM-220.
This image shows the transmitter flat topping, settings where 100W and ALC increased slightly to peak RF output (a few bars visible). The maximum output power achieved and observed on the external power meter was 90W (10% accuracy at full scale). Flat topping is a symptom of the PA being over-driven.
With reduced ALC, i.e. no visible ALC indication in fact one step
(click) below zero observable ALC and with the FT-991 set to 100W, the
following output was observed.

I'm sure I'm missing something in the manual. I have programmed some memories with no problem. When I try to recall a memory, I hit the MCH softkey and nothing happens when I turn the multi knob. I can see the list of memory channels, but I can't recall one. Otherwise, I'm really enjoying my new FT991.
When I have the normal Frequency and S-Meter up on the FT-991 TFT screen, I just hit the V/M button and the rig goes the the last memory channel I last used. Then just use the MULTI knob to scroll through the memory channels.
Press the M/V button to be in memory mode, MEM ## in upper left of touch screen. Touch the MCH touch key. Rotate the Multi knob and memories will scroll thru the frequency window, MEM # changing.
You cannot recall memories when screen shows the Grey memory list.

USB Cable to the YAESU FT-991

Check your Power supply ground, The ring on the power supply ground post terminal may have come out or has gotten loose. It is getting ground from the USB connection which can cause radio failure.

The FT-991 roofing filter uses the 15 kHz filter on AM/FM/C4FM modes. All the other modes use the 3 KHz filter automatically. There is no manual selection possible.

Solution:
The FT-991 does stop on the received signal when scanning, but you must first adjust the squelch to level 9.
There are 2 settings for scan, one is TIME and the other is PAUSE. If the radio is set for TIME, the FT-991 will stop on the received signal for 5 seconds and then resume scanning even if the signal is still present. If set for PAUSE, the FT-991 will stop and remain on the signal until it is no longer present.

It is possible to connect to another node via RF but it will depend on your antenna, the other stations antenna, power out, distance, etc. Plus some nodes are not on the air 24/7.
The best way to use Wires-x is to buy another rig as a node rig, like the FTM-100d and a HRI-200, then connect to it using your FT-991 in wires-x mode, doing this you will be connected via the internet to the the Wires-x system and then you can connect to any active node anywhere. If you use C4FM rigs you can do this digital which gives you more functions and better audio.
