USB Cable to the YAESU FT-991
When I plug in my USB Cable to the FT-991, the radio powers off
Cause/Symptom:
Radio powers off when USB cable is plugged in.
Solution:
Check your Power supply ground, The ring on the power supply ground post terminal may have come out or has gotten loose. It is getting ground from the USB connection which can cause radio failure.

YAESU FT991 MARS modification
I did the MARS modification but the 6m, 2m & 70cm frequencies are not expanded
Cause/Symptom:
I did the MARS mod but the 6m, 2m & 70cm frequencies are not expanded.
Solution:
The MARS mod only opens the HF 160-10m bands.

My FT-991 does not stop scanning
My FT-991 does not stop for 5 seconds when scanning
Cause/Symptom:
My FT-991 does not stop for 5 seconds when scanning
Solution:
The FT-991 does stop on the received signal when scanning, but you must first adjust the squelch to level 9.
There are 2 settings for scan, one is TIME and the other is PAUSE. If the radio is set for TIME, the FT-991 will stop on the received signal for 5 seconds and then resume scanning even if the signal is still present. If set for PAUSE, the FT-991 will stop and remain on the signal until it is no longer present.

*If you already have MAIN: Ver. 02-02, DSP: Ver. 01-04 and TFT: Ver. 02-01 software versions, it is not necessary to update the FT-991 again.

YAESU FT-991 review
I held off buying initially as I was worried about all the problems being reported. I was torn between something top drawer like the FTDX-5000MP and an all things to all men like the FT-991.
The FT-991 should have been my choice of radio as soon as it came out. Its got all I want from a radio – decent receiver, battery capable, and one radio for all bands, all modes, both portable and base.
However, I was stuck in the “I like a traditional radio” mentality and kept buying and selling the FT-817ND/FT-857D/FT-897D but the receiver is just too noisy, even using an external speaker and DSP, they never stayed in the shack long. When the FTDX-5000MP went down to £3,600 including the station monitor, I snapped one up – my 3rd FTDX-5000 since becoming a ham back in 2008. Alas, I wasn't happy running on a uninterruptable power supply should there be a power cut and so I tried an FT-991. The FTDX-5000MP is going up for sale – as is the FT-7900 which becomes surplus to requirements.

Review of FT-991
As someone who OWNS the radio, I can say that overall Yaesu did a pretty good job on it, but missed a few features.
Yaesu FT-991 reviews on eHam.net: gone
Now that’s weird: just a few weeks ago or so there were a number of Yaesu FT-991 reviews on eHam.net. These weren’t all favorable — many owners complained about the radio sounding really bad on AM, giving the radio a 2 out of 5. Also a bit strange: the last time I scrolled through the reviews, nobody mentioned C4FM (System Fusion). It was as if nobody tried it, or even noticed C4FM was there.
I can only guess what’s going on here. False reviews from Yaesu haters? Made-up reviews from people who never ever touched the radio? If so, eHam.net did the right thing – get rid of them all.
